Havelock Island

Havelock is a serene tropical island encompassing about 86 square kilometres. It’s clear waters are rated among the best in the world for Snorkelling and scuba diving. Close to 1000 different species of marine life inhabit the waters of the Andaman Islands. Scuba divers can see nudi branches, sea slugs and snails, varieties of ghost pipe fish, jaw fish and a number of different crustaceans of all shapes and sizes. With its serene beaches, 40 meters visibility underwater, colourful coral reefs and ‘far from the maddening crowd’ appeal, Havelock Island has emerged as a dream destination among discerning travellers.

Inhabited by Bengali settlers since the 1950s, Havelock is about 54km northeast of PortBlair and covers 100 sq km. Only the northern third of the island is settled, and each village is referred to by a number. Boats dock at the jetty at No 1 Village; the main bazaar is 2km south at No 3 Village; and most of the accommodation is strung along the east coast between villages No 2 and No 5. Tropical throughout the year with mean minimum temperature at 23oC and maximum at 30oC. Humidity is relatively high - 70% to 90% with a gentle breeze blowing all the time. The weather is generally pleasant.
